Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) started in 1838 as the Medical College of Hampden-Sydney. That evolved into the Medical College of Virginia (MCV). In 1968, that school was merged with Richmond Professional Institute (RPI) to create Virginia Commonwealth University in downtown Richmond.1
